In 2010, Ion left Moldova in search of work. “I decided to come to Ireland for a new life.” He supported himself for two years but then lost his job and could not find another without a visa. In 2012, Ion decided to return to his family in Moldova and pursue his dream of writing a book. He applied for the VARRP through IOM to receive assistance.
After he returned, Ion worried about whether he would be successful in Moldova. He stayed with his wife’s family at first, but immediately found a job and began writing. He applied for the IOM reintegration grant to help him publish and launch his book.
In 2013, Ion spoke with IOM staff in Moldova about his return experience. He had used the remainder of the grant and book profits to start his own writing business, and he employs one assistant to help him with his publications. Ion felt that returning had been a good decision, and he wanted to remain in Moldova.
