Eugenio lived in Ireland as an irregular migrant for five years. He found construction work almost immediately after arriving but lost his job in 2008 due to the economy. He began to take odd jobs but was increasingly unable to support himself.

In 2012, his parents became ill and needed Eugenio’s help. He decided to return but was not sure how he could afford it. Eugenio met with IOM and received assistance with the cost of his travel to Brazil.

After returning, Eugenio was happy to see his family but he was also worried about his job prospects. He applied for the reintegration grant and opened a small bar. After ten months, however, he had to close and sell the business.

Eugenio spoke with IOM staff after he closed his business and said that he did not choose the right activity for his situation. He had problems managing the finances because rent was expensive and profit was irregular.

Now Eugenio is working in construction and hoping to find a stable position. He still misses Ireland, but he has moved into his own apartment and is glad to be with his family.

“I continue trying to re-adapt myself, and I have hopes I will finally be able to do so.”
