Dmitri worked in Ireland for three years before a period of unemployment in 2009 left him without the means to live. A former colleague told him about IOM, so he made an appointment to get more information. With the assistance of a Moldovan interpreter, Dmitri learned about the VARRP and the reintegration grant. He decided that his return would be more sustainable with the support of the programme.
After he returned, Dmitri applied immediately for the grant. He used the fund to purchase farming tools so that he could grow crops on his family’s land. It was not possible for him to live independently at first. However, after a few months, Dmitri reported that the farm was covering its own costs. Dmitri hoped that it could become the sole income for his family.
Dmitri told IOM staff in Moldova that he felt he made the right choice to return. He hoped to earn enough that he could expand the farm and pursue another career in Moldova.
