Davi came to Ireland in 2009 because he heard that the job prospects were very good. He moved in with friends after arriving and immediately loved Ireland. He worked a variety of odd jobs, in a restaurant, at a farmhouse, and cutting trees.
After a few years, Davi could not support himself financially. He began to have health problems but could not find treatment because of his irregular status. Davi knew he needed to return to Brazil for his health, but he did not know how to do so because of his economic situation.
Friends told Davi that IOM could assist him through voluntary return. He first consulted with a doctor, and received a letter stating that he could fly. Davi then received travel assistance, and IOM staff met him at the airport to help him in transit to Brazil.
After returning, Davi was happy to see his family. He also missed Ireland and felt “doubtful” about his future.
“My mother is a very elderly lady and she was very happy to see me again.”
After receiving medical treatment, Davi was able to begin looking for work. He applied for a reintegration grant so that he could renew his driver’s license and become a driver. Davi was able to purchase a small car in instalments and now works as an independent driver.
He spoke with IOM staff six months after he returned and now feels that returning to Brazil was a good decision since he could not stay in Ireland. He would not emigrate again but hopes to travel.
