IOM Ireland was contacted by a hospital in Dublin to assist with the return and reintegration of a terminally ill woman who wished to spend her remaining days in her homeland. Acting swiftly, IOM Ireland collaborated closely with the woman’s doctor and IOM’s Chief Migration Health Officer to ensure all arrangements were in place. A medical escort was also arranged to accompany her throughout the journey.
The IOM office in her country of return provided exceptional support, working with Civil Aviation authorities to coordinate an ambulance that would meet the plane on the tarmac and transport her directly to a hospital. On the day of departure, the woman received support from IOM teams and her family at Dublin Airport. IOM staff in transit countries also ensured her comfort and addressed her needs during the journey.
The woman arrived safely in her homeland, where she spent her remaining days in peace, surrounded by the love of her family, friends, and familiar surroundings.
